Welcome to Todd
Welcome to your own little slice of heaven, right here in Ashe County, North Carolina! Todd will fulfill your desire of living in a close-knit community within a leisurely distance to the city. Located right between West Jefferson and Boone, North Carolina, Todd feels like its own little world. You'll never tire of looking forward to going home, to escape to your own little world right here on the riverbank of the New River.
Todd has a population just over 2,300, with a median age of 45. While this is a perfect and quiet community for retirees, it's also a great place to start a family; a quarter of the households in Todd are families with children. If you have children, there's no reason to fear for their education. Todd lives within the Ashe County school district, which offers a personal and high-ranked education. Todd offers all the seasons, with a climate that reaches the 80s in the summer and the 20s in the winter. Talk about beautiful autumn views, though! No matter where you're at in your life journey, Todd certainly has something to offer.
Todd holds a number of summer concerts annually, which can be found on the calendar of the TCPO's website. However, one of their most popular annual events has to be the Todd Liberty Parade, which meanders through Downtown Todd all the way to Cook Park, where you'll enjoy parade floats, live music, local food vendors, and dancing. You truly have to see it to believe it!
Rich History
Todd is overflowing with a history that dates back to the Civil War era. Did you know that Todd was larger than Boone in the 1890s? In the early 1900s, the Virginia-Carolina Railway, or the "Virginia Creeper" as it is referred to by locals, made its shining debut through Todd. The Virginia Creeper runs through much of Ashe County, and though little of the original tracks remain, it is still considered a historic landmark today. In its place, you will find Railroad Grade Road, which follows the river and offers a few different access points.
Todd has multiple sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Elkland School Gymnasium, the R.T. Greer, and Company Root and Herb Warehouse, and the Todd Historic District. Within the Historic District lies Todd General Store, which is considered to be one of the oldest continuously operated general stores in North Carolina. If you're ever interested in digging deep into the history of Todd, you can always contact the Todd Community Preservation Organization, who have kept tabs on Todd's history from the timber boom to the Great Depression, to the modern-day charm of the town.
Experiencing the New River
You'll never be searching for something to do outside in Todd, whether you wish to stay on land or hop in the water. Todd is home to two beautiful parks in Ashe County, including Cook Park and Todd Island Park. Biking is incredibly popular along Railroad Grade Road, and you can bring your own or rent one from RiverGirl Fishing Company. RiverGirl is the hub of outdoor supplies in Todd. Also popular along Railroad Grade is running, especially during the annual New River Race, which features a marathon, 10k, 5k, and Fun Run. Whether you're a hiking rookie or extraordinaire, you'll enjoy the trails at Elk Knob State Park, which offers out-of-this-world mountain views. It is impossible not to see kayakers, canoers, tubers, and rafters along the New River during the summertime. The New River is one of the only rivers in the world, besides the Nile, which flows north, and is therefore very popular among locals and tourists alike. You can rent your canoes, kayaks, and rafts from RiverGirl Fishing Company or Wahoo's. And, of course, who could forget fishing? The New River offers plenty of spots where you can wade, which is perfect for fly fishing. Boast your best trout or bass to your buddies!
Dining Options
Todd houses some of the yummiest local food around. In particular, the Todd Mercantile & Bakery is renowned throughout the county. Their homemade cinnamon rolls with maple icing are boasted as possibly the best in the entire world! You can also grab a yummy sandwich or quick bites from River Girl Fishing Company or Todd General Store before you head out on a long day of outdoor leisure.
