Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Welcome to Blowing Rock

The town of Blowing Rock is appropriately named after its picturesque stone formation called The Blowing Rock cliff. Legend says that the winds, which flow upwards due to the shape of the rock face, are strong enough to make a person float! (Don't try this at home, kids). However, The Blowing Rock cliff is not the only jewel of shining beauty in this sweet little town located near Boone, North Carolina. Blowing Rock is surrounded by mountains and nature on all sides, making it the perfect destination for tourists and homeowners alike. Blowing Rock is rich with everything you love.

Rich History

Long ago, before the windy cliffs were visited by the Moravian Church of Germany, the area was home to the Cherokee and Catawba Native American tribes. The town eventually became a destination for Scot-Irish settlers and was even later a battleground during the American Civil War.

From very early on, Blowing Rock was a tourist destination. Its beautiful views and crisp mountain air drew attention from residents of the south. The first hotel in Blowing Rock was built in 1884 and was so aptly named the Watauga Hotel. The hotel industry then began to boom in Blowing Rock, and the Watauga Hotel was soon followed by the Green Park Inn, the Blowing Rock Hotel, and the Mayview Manor. Some of these hotels, including the Dan'l Boone Inn, as well as other sites, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Moses Cone's Flat Top Manor, located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, is in particular a popular historic attraction.

It's no wonder that people have been traveling to Blowing Rock for decades! These views are good for the soul. Blowing Rock offers multiple hiking trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Pisgah National Forest, as well as parks such as the Julian Price Lake Memorial Park, which is situated near the Moses Cone Memorial Park.
